Tried to take a picture of the Orion Nebula with my phone taped to my telescope

I used a roll of duct tape and a lot of hope, but the final image looked like a blurry gray smudge with a piece of lint in the middle. My neighbor saw it and asked if I'd taken a picture of a dirty lens cap. Has anyone actually gotten a decent phone shot of a DSO, or is that just a myth?

Rant: I thought white-labeling was a lazy cash grab until we tried it for our web design agency

We delivered it in three weeks, under their name, and the client loved it. The partner agency paid us our full rate without any hassle. It wasn't about being lazy; it was about them focusing on sales and strategy while we did the expert build work. Now it's a steady 20% of our monthly revenue. Has anyone else built a solid partnership by doing the white-label work, not just selling it?

A customer at the hardware store in Boise tried to return a lawnmower he'd clearly run over a rock

I was working the returns desk last Saturday when a guy brings in a mower with the blade housing completely shattered. He claimed it 'just stopped working' and demanded a full refund, no receipt. When I pointed out the fresh dirt and a chunk of quartzite stuck in the deck, he got in my face and yelled, 'Are you calling me a liar?' for a solid minute. My manager caved and gave him store credit just to make him leave. Now I have to check every single power tool return for damage and soil samples, which adds like 20 minutes to each one. Has anyone else had to start doing weird extra checks because of one bad customer?

My bank froze my account right before a big equipment buy

I was at the supply house in Charlotte last month ready to buy a $4,800 condenser, and my card got declined because my bank flagged the purchase as fraud. I had to call them from the parking lot and wait 20 minutes to get it unlocked. Has anyone else had a big payment blocked like that, and is there a way to warn your bank ahead of time?

Old guy at the fish market told me to always smell the gills, not the skin

I was buying salmon for a big party last Friday, and this older guy next to me at the Fulton Fish Market saw me sniffing the fillet. He leaned over and said, 'Kid, the skin lies. You gotta check the gills, if they got 'em. If they're bright red, you're golden. If they're brown, walk away.' I thought it was just some old-timer talk, but I tried it. The skin on this one piece smelled fine, but the gills were a dull, muddy color. I passed on it and got a different fish. The party went off without a hitch, and everyone raved about the salmon. I've been doing it ever since. Has anyone else gotten a piece of advice from a market vendor that actually saved your bacon?

Stopped wearing shoes inside my own house after a trip to Japan

I used to think it was normal to track outside dirt everywhere... but spending a week in Osaka with a host family changed my mind. Now I have a strict no-shoe policy by the front door, and my mom thinks I'm being weirdly intense about it. Anyone else get a weird look for making people take their shoes off?

The time a kid in line at the 2018 Denver Comic Con asked me who Barry Allen was

I was holding a Flash #123 reprint, and this maybe 12-year-old just looked at the cover and asked if Barry was a new character. It hit me how much the shows and movies have changed what people know. I ended up showing him the book and explaining the whole Jay Garrick connection for ten minutes. Anyone else run into that kind of generational gap at a con?
