My old foreman swore by hand drafting over CAD for layout work
Way back when I was starting out, this guy Gary who ran the shop kept saying you'll never really understand a floor plan if you just click and drag in AutoCAD. He made me lay out a whole commercial kitchen remodel by hand with a scale ruler and a 4H pencil. Took me like 12 hours and I was so annoyed. But then when I imported it into the software later, I caught three clearance issues I would have totally missed. The triangles and sight lines just make more sense when you draw them manually first. Has anyone else had a boss push them toward old school methods that actually paid off?

Oh I wouldn't say he pushed me exactly, the guy was more like "here's the pencil, figure it out or you're fired" vibes. But you're right about the hand drafting thing, though it's not really about being old school vs new school. It's more that your brain processes spatial relationships differently when you're physically drawing lines and measuring with a scale ruler compared to just snapping things in CAD. The tactile feedback forces you to notice things like door swings and fixture clearances that you'd normally gloss over on a screen. I actually still sketch rough layouts on graph paper before opening the software, it makes the whole process smoother.

lol the_jamie that's exactly what I was thinking. Gary sounds like he was from that old school where tough love was the only love. But honestly I've had a similar thing happen where a guy made me hand draft a small bathroom layout and I caught a tub size issue that would've been a total nightmare after the walls went up. The hand drafting thing isn't for everyone though. Some folks just click better with software from the start and that's fine too. It's more about what helps you catch the little things before they become big expensive problems.

Wait, Gary made you hand draft an entire kitchen remodel? That's brutal but honestly genius.
