I think the 'always tip 20%' rule is way too rigid
Was at a diner in Portland last month where the service was just awful. Waited 20 minutes for water, food came out cold, and the guy barely looked at me. Still tipped 15% because I'm not a jerk, but my friend got all self-righteous about it. Said I should tip 20% no matter what because servers live on tips. I get that, but shouldn't the quality of service factor in at all? If someone does the bare minimum, why are they entitled to the same tip as someone who actually tries? I worked food service for 3 years in college and I never expected a full tip if I dropped the ball. Has anyone else found a middle ground on this or am I just being cheap?
