I was out on a community excavation in eastern Colorado last summer, just doing surface survey stuff. We had maybe 15 people spread out across this dry field, mostly novices like me. Around hour three I was getting kinda bored and not really paying attention. Then the dig leader, an older guy named Dave, stopped me and pointed at this tiny piece of reddish clay half buried in the dirt. He said most people would walk right past it. I bent down and picked it up, turned it over. It had these faint corrugated lines on the inside. Dave told me it was probably from a prehistoric cooking pot, maybe 800 years old. That little sherd ended up being one of the only decorated pieces from that whole grid. I still keep it on my desk at home. Has anyone else found a small artifact that ended up being more significant than you thought?

Paid $60 for a fancy backpacking stove and it barely boiled water at 9,000 feet

Took it on a trip to the Sierras last month. Thought I was getting an upgrade from my old BRS3000 but this thing was a total dud. Flame kept flickering in any breeze even with my wind screen. Took like 15 minutes to boil a cup of water at camp. The cheap $15 stove I had before worked way better. Anyone else get tricked by a pricey backpacking stove that just couldn't handle altitude?

The night shift at Waffle House changed how I look at drunk customers

I work the 11pm to 7am shift at a Waffle House off I-95 near Richmond. Six months ago, I used to try and reason with drunk people who came in after the bars closed. I'd explain we were out of grits or that they couldn't smoke inside, and they'd just get louder and more aggressive. Then one night a regular named Mike told me to just nod and smile, give them what they want if it's possible, and never argue. I tried it the next weekend when a couple stumbled in after 2am demanding hashbrowns with chili. I just said yes ma'am, yes sir, kept my head down, and they were out in 20 minutes without a fuss. Now I don't try to correct them or enforce rules unless someone's about to fight. Has anyone else found that just going along with the nonsense keeps your shift way calmer?

Had to choose between the food court stairs or the escalator at an abandoned mall in Ohio

The escalator was totally dark and creaking, so I picked the stairs and ended up sliding down a pile of old dropped ceiling tiles halfway down. Anyone else ever take the wrong route in a dead mall and regret it instantly?

I had a 2015 Ford F-150 tailgate with a decent dent, and a guy named Mike who's been doing this since the 70s told me to go with a metal repair panel instead. I didn't listen, slapped bondo on there, and two months later it cracked right down the middle. Has anyone else found that certain panels just don't hold filler well no matter how careful you are?

Had to choose between a shop rebuild and buying a new injection pump for my old 7.3

My 2002 Ford 7.3 started running rough and losing power last week. I got quotes from a local shop in Nashville for a full rebuild at $4,200 or a reman pump from Diesel Care for $1,800. I went with the reman pump since the motor only has 180k miles and it runs smooth now, but I'm worried the injector tips might be next. Anyone else gamble on just the pump instead of the whole deal?
