Shoutout to the old guy at the lumberyard who saved my whole week

I was building a set of built-in shelves for a client in Greenville and completely messed up my miter cuts on some expensive walnut. This guy named Frank saw me staring at the scrap pile and showed me a trick with a block plane and a shooting board to save the pieces. He spent twenty minutes walking me through it, and I got the joints perfect. Has anyone else had a stranger just step in and fix a project like that?

Just realized my 'genius' idea to sub applesauce for oil in a cake at my mom's house turned it into a gummy brick.

I was trying to be healthy for a family thing last Sunday, but the whole pan came out so dense and wet that my brother just looked at it and asked if we needed a knife or a spoon... anyone have a better swap that actually works?

I finally got a client's hair to hold a curl for more than a day

She had very fine, straight hair that always fell flat within a few hours. I switched from a standard setting spray to a thermal protecting spray before curling, then used a stronger hold hairspray only at the root area after. The change was immediate. Her style lasted a full 36 hours through two workouts. Has anyone else found a better method for fine hair that won't weigh it down?

My grandpa told me to always cut carpet with the pile leaning away from the knife, and I finally saw why.

Honestly, I thought it was just an old timer thing until a job in Eugene last month where I was rushing and cut against the pile on a thick berber. Ngl, the edge looked like a chewed up mess and I had to waste a foot of material to fix it. Anyone got other little rules like that that seem silly but actually matter?

Just logged 1,000 hours on the old 8-inch cutterhead without a major breakdown.

We've been pulling gravel from the same stretch of the Missouri for a month, and I was sure the vibration last week meant a bearing was going. Checked the logs today and realized we crossed that mark yesterday with no real stops. Does hitting a big run time number like that ever make you trust a piece of gear more, or do you just wait for the other shoe to drop?

Found a whole section of a mall in Cincinnati that was sealed off for years

I was poking around the old Forest Fair Village last month and found a set of doors that led to a wing they closed in 2008. The weird part was all the store signs were still up, like they just walked out one day. Has anyone else found a time capsule section like that?

My French press carafe cracked right before my morning coffee

I was making coffee yesterday morning and heard a small pop sound from the kitchen. My glass French press carafe had a crack running from the rim halfway down. I guess the water was a bit too hot, or maybe it was just old. I bought it at a local shop in Austin about three years ago. I had to quickly pour the grounds and water into a regular pot and strain it through a paper filter, which was a mess. The coffee tasted weak and I was late for work. Now I'm looking for a new one, maybe something metal this time. Has anyone else had a French press break on them, and what did you replace it with?

I swore those magnetic oil drain plugs were a total gimmick until my buddy's Duramax

He put one in his 2011 LML about 18 months ago and kept telling me to check it. I finally pulled it for him last week during a service. The amount of fine metal fuzz stuck to that plug was honestly shocking, way more than I ever see on a normal plug. It wasn't just a few specks, it was a solid coating. Changed my mind completely about catching wear particles before they cycle through the whole system. Has anyone else run one long term and seen a real difference in filter life or oil analysis?
