Hot take: I lost a full day's pay on a 'quick' skim coat job
Last month, I agreed to skim coat a small bedroom ceiling for a friend of a friend. He said it was 'mostly smooth' and just needed a light touch. I gave him a flat $200 quote to be nice. When I got there, the old texture was like popcorn mixed with sand, and the ceiling had a serious wave. I spent over 6 hours just prepping and applying the first coat, and it needed two more. I basically worked for $8 an hour. Always check the surface yourself, no matter what they say. Has anyone else been burned by a 'simple' job that turned into a nightmare?

Well, you did agree to a flat rate without seeing it first.

Funny thing, I once agreed to a flat rate for someone to paint my garage. Didn't see the color until they were done. Turned out to be a shade of pink that would make a flamingo blush. So yeah, skipping the check on anything is basically asking for trouble, but sometimes you learn the hard way. At least the paint job was solid, even if my garage looks like a cotton candy machine exploded in it.
