I saw them all over social media for months and figured it was just another trend. But a client brought her own to her appointment in Denver last week, and after using it during her shampoo, her color took so much more evenly. It lifted the product buildup way better than my usual method. Has anyone else tried one and noticed a real difference in service results?

Unpopular opinion: I think a little dish soap in the wash water helps more than it hurts.

On a hot pour for a patio in Tucson last month, I added a small squirt of Dawn to my bucket of water for cleaning tools. I figured it would cut the grease and grime faster. The surprise was how it made the final broom finish go on smoother with less sticking. I learned that a tiny bit can act like a mild release agent without hurting the cure. Has anyone else tried this, or is it a bad idea for certain mixes?

Found an old invoice from 2002 and the numbers are wild

I was cleaning out my old filing cabinet and found a service invoice from my first shop job. We charged a flat $45 for a full Windows XP reinstall, which included data backup and all drivers. The real shocker was the hardware note: a 40GB IDE hard drive cost the customer $120. I looked it up, and that's about $200 in today's money. For 40 gigs. Now you get a 1TB SSD for less than that. It just hit me how much the value of storage and our basic labor has flipped. Back then, the drive was the big ticket item. Now, the drive is cheap, but the hour of skilled labor to install it is worth more. Makes you think about how we price things now. Anyone else have old paperwork that shows how much the game has changed?

PSA: My old router's default password was still set and I found a bunch of weird devices connected

I was checking my network at home and saw a ton of gadgets I didn't own, like a smart plug from a brand I've never heard of. I logged into the router and found the admin password was still the factory default from when I got it two years ago. Has anyone else found something like this and what's the best way to lock things down after a scare?

PSA: The way they did the spines at the Boston Library's conservation lab changed my whole approach

I saw them using a specific 2mm spacer for rounding that I'd never considered, and my backs have been way cleaner since. Anyone else pick up a small trick that just clicked from seeing it done somewhere specific?

Vent: A customer in Cincinnati brought in a car with a 'quick' quarter panel repair from another shop.

They just slapped filler over rust and didn't weld in a patch... it fell apart in six months. How do you guys handle explaining why a proper fix costs more?

Warning: my neighbor said all modern art is just a scam for rich people.

We were talking by the mailboxes last Tuesday and he pointed at my abstract print and said, 'They just throw paint and call it genius to trick you.' It was a cheap print from a college fair, but his take felt so sure and angry. Has anyone had a friend say something that just made you stop and think?

Shoutout to the old timer who still uses a spoke wrench to true wheels

I was at the shop in Tacoma last month and this guy, must have been 70, was using a basic spoke wrench on a carbon rim. He said 'I trust my hands more than a dial gauge.' It made me think about how we all rely on digital tools now. Does anyone else still do certain jobs by feel instead of with a meter?

Tried a cheap knockoff injector puller on a Detroit 60 series and it snapped clean in half

I was working on a 2005 Freightliner in the shop and grabbed a no-name puller from the discount bin to save time. The second I put real pressure on it, the main bolt sheared off and left the tip stuck in the injector bore. Had to spend two hours drilling it out and ordering the proper OTC tool anyway. Anyone have a go-to brand for stubborn injectors that won't leave you in a worse spot?
