Seriously, paper towels in a coffee maker? Those things are full of bleach and other stuff that leaks into the water. No surprise your morning coffee tasted like cleaner.

Sodium hypochlorite is the main bleaching agent. When you run boiling water through it at 212 degrees, that's when it really starts to break down and release into your brew. You're basically making a weak chemical solution that can mess with your stomach lining over time.
