Thought it was a simple cut and replace job. The flange was on a 3-inch steam line, looked straightforward. Turns out the previous guy used a rod I've never seen before, maybe some old nickel alloy. My standard torch setup just wouldn't bite. Ended up grinding it down with a 7-inch disc, then using a cold chisel for the last bit. Took from 7 AM to almost 5 PM. I was replacing the same dryer belt every six months until I started checking the idler pulley arm

Spotted a huge patch of wild lupines on a hike near Flagstaff

I was hiking the Sandy Canyon trail last weekend, just outside of Flagstaff, and I turned a corner to see this massive field of blue and purple lupines. I mean, it was easily a couple hundred plants, all in bloom at once. The sun was hitting them just right, and the whole hillside looked like it was glowing. I've seen lupines before, but never a group this big and healthy in a natural spot. It made me stop and just look for a good ten minutes. I guess the spring rains were really good for them this year. Has anyone else found a surprise like that on a local trail recently?

My local park's native plant section versus the old flower beds

I've been watching the new native plant area in Grant Park for about a year now, and it's way more resilient than the old annual flower beds they used to have. The native section, with stuff like purple coneflower and little bluestem, only needed watering twice all last summer, while the old petunias and marigolds needed it almost every other day. Has anyone else seen a city project like this where going native just clearly worked better?
