Question about buying store brand vs name brand canned tomatoes for chili
I usually grab the cheapest store brand for canned stuff, but last month I made a big batch of chili for a potluck at my church in Austin and decided to try the name brand Muir Glen for once. Huge difference honestly. The store brand tomatoes were watery and kinda pale, while the Muir Glen ones were deep red and thick, made the chili taste way richer. I didn't add any sugar or extra seasoning and it just came together better. Thing is, they cost twice as much - $3.49 a can versus about $1.70 for the store brand. For chili that I make every couple weeks, that adds up fast. Anyone else find certain canned items where the splurge is actually worth it, or do you stick with generics across the board?
