My digital angle finder did the same work in under 2 minutes with no math. Has anyone else noticed this stubborn attitude slowing down jobs on your crew?

Had to pick between a used Miller and a new Lincoln that looked like a toy

Last week I was staring at two welders for a big tank patch job. One was a beat-up Miller Trailblazer from 2008 with 3,000 hours, the other was a shiny new Lincoln Ranger that felt way too light. I went with the Miller because the guy I bought it from swore it had never skipped a beat. First day on the job it threw a code and shut down after 45 minutes of stick welding. Now I'm wondering if that Lincoln would have held up, or if I just got unlucky. Has anyone else had a used machine crap out right when you needed it most?

Made me wonder how many times I've been too tight on stuff that needed room to grow. Any of you guys leave extra gap on high heat joints or am I overthinking this?

I know everyone swears by stick welding for repair work, but I grabbed the MIG gun on a 1/4" steel patch because it was faster. Got the job done in 40 minutes with no slag to chip. Has anyone else had better luck with wire feed on boiler repairs?

He had it dead nuts in under 20 minutes while I'm still fiddling with a $200 paper template that never folds right on the bend line. Does anybody else think we rely too much on these kits instead of learning basic layout math?

I used to just use a speed square and level for layout, but man was I slow. Picked up a Strong Hand MagSquare at a supply house in Gary and it cut my fit-up time in half on a tank project last Tuesday. Anybody else find one tool that just clicked for them like that?

Unpopular opinion: Stick welding isn't always the answer

Had a chat with a younger guy on a job site in Gary last week. He asked why I was running MIG on a 3/8 plate job and said his old foreman always swore stick was the only way for structural. I told him my foreman taught me the same thing 20 years ago, but he was wrong about a lot of stuff. Look, stick has its place, but if you're laying down long horizontal beads on clean steel, MIG is faster and leaves less cleanup. Why are we still acting like it's weak?

Bought a $60 magnetic drill press base and it saved my back on a high beam job

I was tired of hauling a mag drill up and down ladders for overhead work on a grain silo repair last month. That little base let me hang the drill securely so I could work from the catwalk without fighting 40 pounds of metal. Anyone else tried one of these mounting setups or do you just stick with the shoulder burn?

We were working on a feedwater heater at a plant outside of Baton Rouge. The tube sheet had some bad welds and we had to redo about 30 of them. Was testing a 20-foot boiler drum and a compression fitting let go at 150 psi. Had to drain the whole setup and swap it with a union fitting before we could restart.

Swapped to flux core wire and my welds got worse before they got better

Finally gave up on my MIG setup on that 3/8 plate job last week and switched to flux core like the old timers keep saying. First three beads looked like a bird pooped on the steel. Tons of slag and spatter. Kept at it though and by the end of the shift my penetration was way deeper. Not as pretty but I think it's stronger. Any of you guys made the switch and had a rough start?

Overheard a journeyman say he never uses soap on his tools and it changed my mind about cleaning them

I always scrubbed my wrenches and cutters with soap and water after every job, but this old-timer at the union hall said soap strips the natural oils and makes tools rust faster in our humid boiler rooms. He just wipes his down with a rag and a little WD-40 after each shift, and his stuff from 20 years ago still looks new. Has anyone else gone the no-soap route or am I just being lazy now?

Rant: when my welding rod got stuck in a crack on a job in Gary

I was up on a water tower outside Gary last summer, trying to patch a crack that kept showing up during inspection. About 20 minutes in, my welding rod jammed right into a tight spot and I couldn't pull it free. I tried tapping it loose with my hammer, no luck. Then I grabbed my chisel and chipped around it, but that just made the crack bigger. My foreman yelled up asking what the hold up was, and I had to admit I messed up. I ended up grinding the whole thing down and starting over with a fresh rod, which cost me an extra hour. That crack was a pain, but I learned to always check the gap before I start feeding rod. Has anyone else had a rod get stuck in a weird spot like that?

Yesterday on a job at a refinery outside Baton Rouge, I'm grinding down a weld and it keeps snagging. Foreman walks by, watches for a second, then just says 'you know that guard angles different for a reason right?' I had the guard flipped the wrong way the whole time, making me hold the grinder at a weird tilt. Fixed it and the wheel barely kicked back at all. Anyone else have one of those 'oh duh' moments with basic gear?

Found it in an old OSHA archive pdf I was digging through for a job. I knew poor welds were bad but i didnt think it was that high. Most were on older firetube units where guys tried to skip post weld heat treatment. Makes me double check every repair ticket now. Anybody else run into sketchy repair work on older boilers?
