Pro tip: double-check your load radius on the first pick of the day

Almost overshot my lift radius by 3 feet this morning because the ground settled overnight from rain. Now I always run a quick test cycle before hooking the actual load - saved me from a potential tip-over today.

Carl at the supply shop convinced me to try waterborne primer

I always swore by solvent-based primer, but Carl said I was burning money on booth time. He showed me a door he did last Tuesday that dried in 20 minutes with zero fisheye, so I grabbed a gallon to test my next job. Anyone else have luck switching over?

My buddy told me to stop singing along to Landslide and just listen... finally get it now

Honestly, I always cranked Stevie Nicks during my commute and belted every word until my buddy Dave told me to shut up and just hear the guitar for a change. He said the pedal steel carries the whole emotion. Tried it last Friday on the 405 and yeah, I actually felt the song hit different without my voice in the way. Anyone else had a friend call them out on their car singing habits?

A old timer told me to stop grinding my tungsten and it saved me hours on a job

I was on a boiler repair in Gary, Indiana last month and a guy named Hank pointed out I was spending way too much time sharpening my tungsten to a perfect point. He said for most AC TIG work on carbon steel, just snap it with pliers and it'll arc start way better. Honestly I thought he was crazy but I tried it on a 6 inch schedule 80 pipe weld and it worked great. Has anyone else tried this or do you guys still stick to the grinder?

Noticed a huge difference after switching to PVA glue for my text blocks

I used to use standard white glue for years, then a buddy at my local shop in Austin convinced me to try PVA. The pages lay so much flatter and I don't get that wavy spine anymore. Has anyone else made that swap and seen a big change?

Just crossed 200 custom pull orders this year, that's a record for me.

I usually do about 120-150 in a normal year, but this year people have been asking for crazy one-off shapes and sizes. Has anyone else seen a spike in custom work over standard catalog stuff?

Reading my old book club notes from 2015...

I was cleaning out my desk drawer last week and found my notebook from when I first started hosting book club. Back then I used to assign everyone a character to track and we would debate who was the most reliable narrator... it felt so structured and serious. But after a while I noticed people were just nodding along instead of really sharing what they thought. So about 3 years ago I switched to a "no homework" approach... we just show up and talk about whatever jumped out at us from the reading. Now we get into actual arguments about what a scene really meant because nobody feels like they have to defend a pre-written analysis. Honestly the rows are way more fun now. Has anyone else found that ditching the formal structure made your discussions better or worse?

My band saw blade snapped mid-cut on a whole ribeye yesterday

I was breaking down a 60 lb primal ribeye for steaks yesterday morning around 10 AM and about halfway through the first cut the blade just gave out with a loud pop. Sent a chunk of metal flying across the cooler floor and scared the new guy pretty bad. Turns out I had been running the tension too high for weeks and it wore a weak spot right near the weld. I had to switch over to my backup handsaw to finish the whole thing which took forever and messed up my timing for the lunch rush. The blade was only three weeks old so I'm wondering if I got a bad batch or if I'm just cranking it too tight. Has anyone else had this happen with the bimetal blades from the supply house on High Street?
