inWarning: the 'freeze your credit card in a block of ice' trick cost me $150
Tried the ice trick once and ended up using a hammer like a caveman. My neighbor still brings it up. What's your current plan to stop the spending?

inGetting a permit for a small solar panel install turned into a 4-month mess
Austin's permit office is a classic case. It's the same thing with trying to get a simple patio cover approved, or even a fence. The rules are so scattered and the feedback is never clear the first time. You end up playing this guessing game with city staff, wasting months. Makes you wonder if they actually want people to improve their own homes.

inJust read that a huge number of vintage camera repairs are actually from user error, not age
Yeah the battery door thing is a classic. I read a repair blog where a guy said like 80% of "dead" vintage cameras just need the contacts cleaned. People forget these things sat in a drawer for 30 years, of course there's corrosion. Same with sticky shutters, sometimes it's just old lube and a few fires of the mechanism loosens it right up. We all jump to the worst conclusion.

inI found out the original Hoover Dam mix used a 1:2.25:2.5 ratio from a documentary
Sometimes the old ways were just wrong though.

inI know everyone swears by the 3-ton floor jack, but my little 1.5-ton from Harbor Freight has been my go-to for 90% of jobs for the last 4 years.
My uncle's garage is basically a museum for unused giant tools, all bought for that "one big job" that never happens. Sean_johnson16 is right, it's like some guys think a bigger tool makes them better at the job. They get sold on the power fantasy and end up with a heavy paperweight. My neighbor's massive impact wrench has seen less action than my basic screwdriver set.
