Remember when we used to just muscle through a heavy limb drop?

I was on a job in Austin maybe 8 years ago, clearing a big live oak with a massive, horizontal limb over a shed. The old way was to just notch it, cut it, and let it slam down hoping the rigging held. This time, I tried something a guy at a conference mentioned: using a second, smaller notch on the underside of the limb, about a foot out from your main notch. You cut that one first, just a shallow relief cut. Then when you make your main top cut, the limb hinges and settles way more gently instead of cracking and dropping. It felt like cheating, but it worked perfectly, no shock load on the ropes at all. The crew looked at me like I'd done magic. Anyone else pick up a simple trick like that that just changed how you handle a common risky cut?

Warning: A stripped bolt on a vintage Raleigh turned my whole afternoon around

I was helping a friend fix up his old Raleigh three-speed in his garage, the kind with the Sturmey-Archer hub. We were trying to adjust the shifter cable, and the tiny 5mm bolt on the cable anchor was just frozen solid. I gave it a careful turn with my Park Tool hex wrench, felt it slip, and my heart sank. The bolt head was completely rounded out. I spent the next hour trying everything: a torx bit hammered in, some penetrating oil I had in my truck, even a pair of vise grips. Nothing worked. I finally had to drill it out carefully with a 3mm bit, which felt awful on such a classic part. The whole job, which should have taken 20 minutes, ate up most of the day. Has anyone found a better trick for those tiny, rusted cable anchor bolts besides just drilling?

Shoutout to the guy who told me to use a chalk line for my deck boards

I was putting down a new deck last spring and just eyeballed the first few boards. A neighbor saw me and said to snap a chalk line every five boards. I thought it was overkill, but the difference was huge. The second half of the deck looks perfectly straight, and the first half has a slight wave you can see from the yard. Has anyone else found a simple tool that fixed a whole project?

TIL that cheap aftermarket injector for a 6.7 Powerstroke cost me $450 and a whole weekend of rework.

I always thought 'love bombing' was just a silly buzzword until my date in Phoenix last month.
