I switched from a credit union to a big bank after 6 years and the $12 wire fee actually sold me

My mom's been at the same credit union in Nampa for 22 years and I finally got her to move last spring after they held a $900 check for 11 days. The thing nobody tells you is the "big bank" has tiers, so that $12 wire only stays $12 if you keep a certain balance or get direct deposit, otherwise it jumps to like $30. Check your fee schedule before you get comfy. I bounced between both for a couple years, kept the credit union for the car loan since their rates were way better, and used the big bank for anything that needed to move fast. That setup worked until the credit union started charging me $5 a month just to have the savings account open. At that point I closed it and never looked back. If you still owe on the truck, pull up both rates before you cut ties, because the wire fee is small potatoes next to what you pay in interest.
