My sister told me to 'just be myself' on a date and I ended up ranting about squirrels for 20 minutes

So I went on a date last weekend with this guy I met at a coffee shop in Chicago. My sister, who is always giving relationship advice, told me to 'just be yourself' and not try to impress him. I took that literally. We sat down at a pizza place and I got nervous, so I started talking about how I feed the squirrels in my backyard and they have names like Chonky and Nibbles. He asked one question about them and I went on a full tangent about the squirrel hierarchy in my neighborhood. He just stared at me, finished his slice, and said he had to leave early. Has anyone else taken advice too literally and regretted it?

Had a customer scream at me over a 50 cent coupon yesterday

This lady comes in with a wrinkled coupon from last month, expired by three weeks. I tell her sorry, can't take it, and she starts yelling about how we're scamming her. She blocked my register for 15 minutes while the line built up behind her. My manager eventually caved and gave her the discount just to get rid of her. Has anyone else had a manager undermine you like that over something so small?

TIL my neighbor's comment about my weekly grocery run changed how I budget

I'm a budget buyer through and through, but my neighbor Linda said I was wasting money buying fresh veggies at the big chain store every week. She told me to try the farmers market on 5th Street for $2 less per pound. Now I only go to the chain store for non-perishables and I'm saving about $30 a month. Anyone else had someone call out a habit that actually saved you cash?

Pre-wiring an old house vs new construction is a whole different beast

Did a retrofit in a 1920s house last Tuesday where I had to run wires through a crawl space that was maybe 2 feet high. Took me 5 hours to do what I could have done in 45 minutes if the walls were open. What made the difference was using a glow rod kit with a magnetic tip it saved me from fishing blind for 30 minutes. Got the job done but my back is still sore. Has anyone found a faster way to snake walls with old knob and tube wiring in the way?

Threw $400 at a used paint booth fan and it died in 6 months

Back in 2019 I found a deal on a old paint booth exhaust fan from a shop closing down near Charlotte. Paid $400 cash thinking I was being smart and saving money. It ran fine for maybe 4 months then started making this grinding noise and finally seized up. Had to buy a new one for $900 anyway so I basically threw that $400 straight in the trash. Any of you guys ever get burned buying used shop equipment like that?

Old timer told me I was running the cutterhead too fast and burning through teeth in 3 weeks

He said drop the RPMs by 200 and let the material do the work, and now a set of teeth lasts me almost 2 months on the same sandy bottom job out of Mobile Bay, anyone else get that same advice or am I the only one who was overworking it?

Had a week where every repair I touched just went wrong from the start

Last Tuesday I tried fixing an old stereo receiver for a customer and accidentally bridged two solder points on the board, which killed the power supply completely. Then on Thursday I spent three hours on a microwave that turned out to have a bad door switch I missed on my first check. Has anyone else had a stretch where it feels like you can't catch a break with even simple jobs?

Had a shop foreman tell me to ignore the feeds and speeds on the setup sheet

I was running a job last week on a Haas VF-2, doing some 6061 aluminum parts. The old timers setup sheet said 150 IPM at 12K RPM, but our shop foreman, Mike, told me to crank it down to 80 IPM so the tool would last. I listened to him and ended up with a terrible surface finish and a 4 hour cycle time instead of 2.5. Has anyone else found that the "experts" advice sometimes just wastes time instead of helping?

Overheard a foreman say something that made me rethink my whole drafting approach

I was at a job site in St. Louis last Thursday and heard a foreman tell his apprentice that 'a good drafter makes the constructor's job boring.' It got me thinking about how we often try to show off with complex details instead of just making things simple and clear. That comment has stuck with me ever since because it really changed how I look at my own drawings. Has anyone else had a random comment like that shift your perspective on drafting?

Stopped thanking people for holding the door after a trip to Chicago

I used to always say thanks when someone held a door for me. But last month I was in Chicago at a busy train station and this guy held the door for like 20 people. He wasn't doing it to be polite, he was just stuck in the flow. Nobody said a word to him. It made me think, maybe the social norm of thanking everyone for basic courtesy is just noise. Now I only thank people if they go out of their way, like holding it from a distance. Has anyone else dropped a common nicety after seeing it done differently somewhere?
