Switched from dedicated chamfer tools to a single chamfer mill for everything

Drove me nuts for years swapping out chamfer tools every time I changed a hole size. I did the same thing you did about six months back, switched to one 90 degree mill and just adjusted depth per hole. Cut my setup time in half on repeat jobs and the tooling cost dropped way off. Now I keep a handful of different sizes in the drawer for weird angles but the single tool handles 90% of what I do. Smart move.

Appreciation post: the AD that saved my skin last week

That 2023-12-07 AD is pretty specific about the torque values on those hydraulic clamps, but honestly I've seen guys get by with just snugging them up by hand for years. The real issue isn't the torque it's the clamp itself getting loose from vibration. Unless you're seeing actual fluid leaking out I wouldn't go tearing into the logbook for something that might just be a minor seep. I've had a few ADs pop up for stuff like that and half the time it's just a paper trail thing that doesn't change anything in the field. You probably caught it before it got bad but I'd wait and see if it actually drips before calling it a near miss.

I think the push for all new builds to be 100% AFCI protected is going too far

I mean, maybe it's just me but I think that line kind of misses the mark a bit. The whole "if it ain't broke don't fix it" thing works fine when you're talking about a single messy script that one person wrote. But when you're dealing with a whole team of devs working on the same codebase for years? That old code can turn into a real nightmare real quick. Like, I've seen projects where nobody touched a certain piece of code for 3 years because it was "working fine" but then a new feature needed to hook into it and suddenly nobody could even figure out what it was doing. And sure, you could argue that's a documentation problem too, but idk, sometimes a refactor makes way more sense than trying to bolt new stuff onto something that was never designed for it.

I finally tried a coal forge instead of propane

Hell yeah, that clean weld on the first try is a great feeling!

My local shop's new owner made a huge change and I'm not sure how to feel

the_max, half those shops are just selling the same cheap resold AliExpress stuff now with a 300% markup.
