Neighbor's basement leak ruined his classic SLR, need rust cleanup tips

A big rainstorm flooded parts of my town recently. My neighbor handed me his old SLR that got wet in his basement. The mirror box now has rust on the gears. Has anyone fixed cameras with water damage like this? What should I use to clean the rust off safely?
