I finally put in a geothermal heat pump, and the ground squirrels loved it.
Digging the trenches, I found a family of squirrels had moved into the piping. They kept chewing on the insulation, causing tiny leaks. I had to call a wildlife removal service before I could finish the job. It turned a simple install into a three-day adventure.

Tried to install a rain barrel last year. Raccoons treated it like a personal water park. @sandraa82, your bird story sounds familiar. Had to wrap the whole thing in chicken wire after they chewed through the hose.

Raccoons chewed through a hose? That's wild. Those things are tough plastic, not some flimsy garden tube. Must have been a serious family of raccoons with a real thirst. Makes chicken wire sound like a smart move, even if it looks terrible. I'd be worried about what they'd go after next.

Nature always finds a way into our plans. Last summer, birds built a nest in our attic vents, and we had to wait weeks before we could seal it up. It's like animals see our projects as free real estate, especially when we start digging in their space. Even with good intentions like installing green tech, we still end up disturbing their homes.
