Realized I keep matching with men who think 'being funny' means insulting me

Was on a date last week at a coffee shop in Portland, and the guy spent 20 minutes making jokes about my job as a teacher. Said I must 'love being broke' and 'babysitting rich kids.' I laughed the first time to be polite, but by the third jab I just got up and left. Why do so many guys think being mean is the same as being clever? Has anyone else dealt with this confusing flirting thing where they tear you down?

Debate: do you side with the customer who records everything or the worker who refuses service?

Had a guy at my register last week in St. Louis who held up his phone the whole time and said he was recording for 'quality assurance.' I asked him to put it away per store policy and he went off about his rights and how he's been burned before by cashiers. I get it, people have had bad experiences, but it feels super disrespectful when someone films you without asking. On the other hand, some workers really do mess up orders or act rude and having proof could help. So who's in the wrong here? Has anyone else had a customer pull out a phone mid transaction like that and how did you handle it?

Had to choose between 3 episodes of One Piece filler or a 45-minute recap movie last night

Picked the filler arc because at least it had new animation. Wasted 2 hours before I realized the recap movie would've been funnier since it skipped the whole Davy Back Fight nonsense. Anyone else ever regret your watching choice mid-episode?

Swapped from pneumatic rivet guns to battery-powered after fighting with hoses one too many times

I was always a die-hard pneumatic guy. Thought batteries were for toys. Then last month I was doing a skin panel on a CRJ out on the ramp in 95 degree heat and kept tripping over the air hose, having to swap fittings, and dealing with the compressor cycling on and off. A buddy let me borrow his Ingersoll Rand battery rivet gun for one row of rivets. I got through 40 rivets on one battery charge and the pull force felt just as good as my pneumatic. I switched that same week after 12 years of using air tools. Anyone else made the jump and found a model that holds up on heavy gauge aluminum?

Learned something about elevator cable tension that surprised me yesterday

I was reading through an old service manual from 1998 for a Dover elevator we still maintain, and I found out the tension on the governor cable should only be about 15 pounds for that model. I've been tightening them to what felt right, probably twice that. It got me thinking about how many older units I might have over-tensioned over the years. Has anyone else ever found a spec in an old manual that changed how you do regular maintenance?

Debate: should you call out a customer who is clearly lying about a return?

Had a woman at the grocery store try to return a half-eaten rotisserie chicken last Tuesday, said it was "dry and inedible." But I saw her eat three bites out of it in the parking lot before she came back in, and there was a receipt from two days ago. I just processed it because my manager was watching, but part of me wondered if I should have called her on it. What do you all do when a customer is obviously lying right to your face?

Question about making a big pot of soup last all week

I always thought making a big batch of soup was a good budget move, but mine would get boring after day two. My friend in Milwaukee said to cook the base, but leave out the starches like potatoes or pasta until you reheat each bowl. I tried it with a simple bean and veggie soup, making a big pot on Sunday. Each night, I'd cook a small handful of rice or some ditalini right in my bowl of hot soup. It kept the texture perfect and felt like a fresh meal every time. What other tricks do you have for keeping big batch meals from getting old?

Finally got my mom to stop posting my kid's full name online

She kept tagging our location and his school in every photo, and after the third data breach notice from his pediatrician's office, I sat her down with a map showing how easy it is to find our house from that info. How do you explain digital footprints to someone who still prints out emails?

My uncle showed me his trick for fixing a sticky door in his old farmhouse

We were working on his place in rural Ohio last fall, trying to fix a front door that kept jamming. He took a plain bar of soap and rubbed it along the top edge of the door frame. He said, 'Been doing this for 40 years, kid. Sometimes the fix is in the kitchen, not the toolbox.' The door slid smooth right after. Anyone know other simple household items that work for quick fixes like that?

PSA: Our agency partner in Denver sent us a 50 page contract for a simple referral deal

We were supposed to just send them leads for a cut, but their legal team went nuts. My boss told me to just sign page 7 with a smiley face and send it back as a joke. Shockingly, their CEO called and said 'finally someone gets it' and we closed the deal over a 10 minute call. Has anyone else had a weirdly formal process get totally short-circuited by something silly?
