I found out the original Hoover Dam mix used a 1:2.25:2.5 ratio from a documentary
That's way less cement than I would've guessed for a project that size. Who else has run into a spec that made them double-check their own methods?

Right? That mix is WILD when you think about the scale. It really shows how much the science has changed. I saw something similar with old lime mortar specs on a restoration job. The modern guys were ready to use a ton of Portland, but the original was mostly sand and lime. Makes you question all the "standard" practices.

Sometimes the old ways were just wrong though.

So what made the old way the standard in the first place? @clairem47's example really makes you wonder what we're doing now that'll seem crazy later.
