Why does nobody talk about how quiet libraries actually are these days
I walked into the downtown public library last Saturday looking for a quiet spot to read, and it was like a tomb. I mean, I get that libraries are supposed to be quiet, but there were maybe 8 people in the whole building and you could hear a pin drop. No kids programs happening, no teens giggling in the corner, no old guys arguing about newspapers. The librarian at the front desk whispered my name when I checked out a book, and I almost jumped. It felt more like a museum than a place for people to gather and learn. I left after 20 minutes because the silence was actually uncomfortable. Has anyone else noticed this shift where libraries went from busy community hubs to completely empty quiet zones?
