Back when I started at a shop in Austin, my whole process was about deep diagnosis. I'd spend a whole afternoon with a multimeter, hunting for a bad capacitor on a motherboard or a short on a power rail. It felt like real detective work. About three years ago, the math just stopped adding up. A client with a five year old laptop came in with a no-power issue. I quoted two hours of labor at $85 an hour to find the fault, plus the part cost. They could buy a decent refurb for less. Now, my first move is almost always a known-good swap. Got a weird boot loop? Swap the RAM first. No display? Try a different screen. If the swap fixes it, I order the part. If not, I move on. It's faster for the client and keeps my bench clear. I miss the puzzle sometimes, but the job changed. Has anyone else shifted to this swap-first method to keep up?

My neighbor said my deck stain job looked like a toddler did it with a mop

He pointed out my brush strokes were way too heavy and I was leaving puddles in the grain. I switched to a foam roller for the next coat and the difference was night and day. Anyone have a better method for applying outdoor stain on pressure-treated wood?

Pro tip: a dab of grease on the derailleur hanger threads is a game changer

I was putting together a new bike yesterday and just grabbed the hanger bolts dry like I always have. The torque wrench clicked at 8 Nm, but the whole thing felt gritty. On a whim, I backed them out, put a tiny bit of Phil's grease on the threads, and tried again. The wrench action was smooth as butter and the click felt solid, not like it was fighting me. It made me realize I've probably been over-torquing those bolts for years by fighting thread friction. Has anyone else noticed a big difference with greasing small fasteners like that?

I swore off checking spoke tension until a wheel folded on a gentle curb
