Victorian sweeps in London actually used a whole kit of specialized rods and scrapers. It was a bit more involved than just a basic brush.

Honestly, those old wire brushes and scrapers were just the basics for a dirty job. Elliotramirez is right about the ingenuity, but it's not like they were building rockets. Tbh, they were just trying to not get soot everywhere.
