Rant: I picked a local news site over a big one for my ad money last quarter

My choice was between a big national news site and our small city's online paper. I went with the local one, spending about $500. The traffic numbers were lower, but I got three real customers who called and mentioned the ad, which never happened with the big sites. Has anyone else found that local just works better for certain businesses?

My buddy's bakery in Springfield spent $300 on a local blog ad and booked five catering jobs from it.

That's a solid return, but I'm stuck on the local blog part. Was it a food focused site or just a general town news page? Also curious if those five jobs were small orders or big enough to make that $300 back fast.

Shane's buddy getting five jobs from a $300 ad is a crazy good deal. That local focus means people are already in the mood to spend in their own town. I get what @aliceshah is asking about the blog type, but for a bakery, even a general community page works because everyone needs food for events.
