Did he actually tell you he hated the place, or did he just say that to make you feel better about picking it? That detail matters because if he was just being nice, you might be reading way more into it than you should. Next time just ask him straight up where he wants to go and see if he picks something real.

Bought a $450 ultrasonic cleaner, ruined two shutters, back to hand cleaning

My buddy did the same thing with a vintage watch movement, figured if it works on carbs it works on everything. That's the trap with tools that brute force their way through a job, they don't know the difference between grime and delicate parts. Ultrasonics are great for solid chunks of metal, not hair thin blade edges rattling around in a bath.

Update: saved $140 on my electric bill by washing clothes at 6am in Newhall

Where'd you land on that $70 number though? Newhall summers get brutal and running the AC during peak is what really eats the bill, not laundry. Seems like the drop might be from something else you changed that month instead of just the 6am thing.
