Wow, so the bank basically pays you back and then the state wants a cut of your own money back. That's like getting a birthday gift and your parents charging you rent on it. My guess is your accountant is just covering their bases since California loves to tax anything that moves.

A $340 charge for answering emails is nuts. That firm was billing you for breathing. My sister runs a bakery in Portland and had almost the same deal, local CPA nickel and dimed her for every little thing. She moved her books to a woman in Manila and saved about $1,200 a month. She still keeps a US CPA for the tax filing part only, since the rules here are a whole different ball game. That split makes the most sense to me. Let the offshore person do the day to day, keep a US pro for taxes.
