I was volunteering on a site near the Santa Cruz River, carefully brushing dirt away from what looked like a perfect little clay pot. My supervisor, Dr. Chen, came over and after about thirty seconds just started laughing. It was a tiny, factory-made flower pot from a kid's gardening set, probably from the 1990s. Now I triple-check everything that looks a little too perfect and clean. Anyone else have a story about finding something modern that totally fooled you at first?

I spent 8 hours trying to figure out a simple question about my phone bill

So last month, my phone bill jumped by $40 for no clear reason. I called customer service, and they said it was a new fee for a service I never asked for. They told me to check my online account to remove it. Simple, right? Well, I logged in and the menu to change it was hidden in a place called 'manage add-ons' under a tab labeled 'billing' that wasn't actually about billing. I clicked around for over an hour. Then I called back, got transferred three times, and was on hold for what felt like forever. The third person finally walked me through it, but the whole thing, from first seeing the bill to fixing it, took my whole Saturday. Has anyone else had a simple customer service fix turn into a full day project? What was your 'quick question' that wasn't quick at all?

My brother finally got me to watch The Bear after months of saying no

I kept telling him I didn't want to watch a show about a kitchen, it sounded too stressful. We were at his place in Chicago last month, and he just put on the first episode while I was stuck on his couch with a sprained ankle. He said, 'Just give it ten minutes, it's not about the food, it's about the people.' The opening scene with the chaos of the original beef place and that frantic camera work had me hooked. I ended up watching three episodes right there. The way it shows family pressure and trying to fix a broken thing really got to me. I binged the whole first season over the next two days. Has anyone else been totally wrong about a show at first because of what they thought it was about?

Tried two ways to fix a broken hollandaise last week

Had a split sauce during a busy brunch. First I tried the classic whisk in a bit of hot water, which just made it worse. Then I grabbed a fresh yolk, whisked it in a clean bowl, and slowly added the broken sauce back to it. That saved it in about 90 seconds. What's your go-to rescue for a broken emulsion?

I always cut my own tack strips until a job in Tempe went sideways

The builder wanted me to use their pre-cut strips, which I thought was a waste of time and money. After a full day of fighting their warped pieces, I finally gave in and cut my own fresh ones, and the whole room went down in under two hours. Do you ever push back on a client's supplied materials, or just roll with it to keep the peace?

Just read that air fryers use way less oil than I thought

I was looking at the manual for my new Cosori air fryer last night. It said you only need about a tablespoon of oil for a whole batch of fries. I used to deep fry them in a big pot of oil. That's a huge difference. I made some chicken wings with just a spray of oil and they were still crispy. Has anyone else cut their oil use way down? What's your go-to low oil recipe?
