My $300 'emergency fund' class was pure garbage until week 6
I signed up for this online budgeting course in Cleveland last month because I kept living paycheck to paycheck. The first five weeks were just them pushing their app and telling me to cut coffee, which I don't even drink. Then week six they made us list every single automatic payment I forgot about, like my gym membership and a streaming bundle I never use. That one exercise showed me $87 a month leaking out, and now I've cancelled three of them. Anyone else find that the boring 'list your subscriptions' step is what finally stuck?
Did you go through your bank statements line by line or just look at what was in your head? I ask because most people miss stuff when they try to do it from memory. What worked for me was logging into my bank account and scrolling through three months of charges while writing everything down on paper. It took maybe an hour but I caught stuff I had totally forgot about, like a cloud storage plan and some app I downloaded once for a project. The trick is doing it every few months too, because new ones sneak in. That $87 you found is real money, and it adds up fast once you start cutting.
