My buddy from the shop in Fresno swore by using a heat gun on hail dents, tried it on a 2018 Civic and made a mess

Listen to your buddy from the shop and you'll end up with a car that looks like it has a weird plastic surgery scar. The heat gun trick is a great way to cook your clear coat, which is exactly what @the_piper is talking about with that shiny spot. You basically melt the finish to make the metal move, and then you're stuck with a permanent shiny reminder of your mistake right next to the dent. It takes a real pro with the right tools to massage a dent out without wrecking the paint. That shiny ghost dent is way more obvious than the original hail ding was.

My kid asked why we don't just get ribs from the restaurant anymore

That slow process... it's the real meal.

Update: I switched from using a regular screwdriver to a JIS driver on a Pentax lens mount

Oh man, JIS is a total game changer for that.

People are still using the wrong grade of rod for high-pressure steam lines and it's a problem.

Remember that time they let the new guy patch a concrete curb without checking the mix? It looked fine for a week, then the whole section just crumbled like a cookie. We had to tear it out and redo the whole pour, which took three times as long. That little shortcut cost the project two full days. Makes you wonder what that bent spec is hiding.

Hot take: I think the 'hustle culture' advice is mostly bad for small shops

That grind mindset can actually burn out your best employees first, which costs way more than any extra hours would make.
