My grandpa said to always keep a sharpening steel in the freezer for tough gristle.

That freezer steel trick always sounded like an old wives tale to me... a sharp, dry blade and just lifting the corner with the tip is all you need. Once you get that first little bit up, you can pull the membrane off with your fingers. The cold just seems like it'd make everything more slippery.

Decided to try a 'no phone' date after reading about it online

Yeah, that's the whole problem with rules like that, right? They work great in a perfect world. Reminds me of when my buddy tried a full digital detox, but then his kid's school kept calling the house phone he never checks. The point @the_max makes is spot on, life doesn't follow your plan. You can't just ignore the fact people might need to reach you.

I thought using a climbing line for rigging was a bad idea until a job in Sedona

Honestly that "feels wrong at first" thing is so true. I had the same gut reaction using a stretchy line to lower a branch over a shed. Tbh it just lets the piece settle in without that harsh jerk, which is way safer for the spotter. Ngl you gotta know the limits, but it's a smart trick.

Spent $250 on a 'life coach' and it was the worst money I ever wasted

What if you're paying for the right questions?

My 8-year-old nephew asked me if the dredge was a giant metal whale that eats rocks.

Remember that guy who described a sunset as "like a peach bruise"? We all just stared at him. It was so weirdly perfect we didn't know what to say. Some things are just too good for a simple compliment.
