Took my family to see 'Battlefield Earth' and I actually liked it

Went into this one expecting a total trainwreck. Everyone online calls it the worst movie ever. But me and my buddy sat down last Saturday and watched the whole thing. The cheesy acting and weird plot twists just made it hilarious. We were laughing more than at most comedies. Maybe I'm crazy, but does anyone else find bad sci-fi oddly fun?

I used to defend everyone against cancel culture... now I pick my battles

Back in 2020 I'd jump into every Twitter thread to argue someone got canceled unfairly. Like that baker in Texas who lost half her orders over a joke about rainbow frosting. I spent probably 20 hours a week fighting for strangers. Now? I only speak up if the person is actually losing income or getting threats. Last week a local artist got dragged for a old myspace post from 2006. I stayed out of it. Does anyone else feel like the stakes have changed or am I just getting tired?

My foreman called me out for skipping preheat on a 6-inch pipe flange

He said the weld would crack before the winter and sure enough, three months later I was grinding out a hairline fracture on that same flange, so has anyone else had a weld fail because you rushed the heat?

Tried writing a flash fiction story using only dialogue and it totally flopped

I sat down last Tuesday and wrote a 500 word story with zero narration, just people talking back and forth. I thought it would feel punchy and real, like a movie scene on paper. But when I read it back, I had no clue who was speaking half the time or what was happening. Learned that even with dialogue, you still need a little bit of description to ground the reader. Has anyone else tried a writing constraint that backfired on them?

Rant: That date where everyone told me to dump him but I didn't

So last Friday I went on a third date with this guy named Mike who showed up 40 minutes late to our dinner at this Italian place on Elm Street. He didn't even apologize, just said traffic was bad. My friends all said red flag, dump him. But honestly, I waited it out and we talked for 3 hours after that. He told me his mom had a medical scare that afternoon and he was at the hospital. He didn't want to cancel on me last minute. So we ordered garlic bread and split a tiramisu, and it was actually the most real conversation I've had in months. Has anyone else had a date that looked bad on paper but turned out okay?

Just swapped from wired sensors to wireless for a house job in Austin

I've always been a hardwired guy because I figured wireless was just a gimmick for DIYers. But last month I had this old Victorian in Austin where running wires through the plaster walls would have been a nightmare. The homeowner wanted it done in 3 days and I was like no way with my usual approach. So I grabbed a Honeywell wireless kit and honestly it was way easier than I thought. The sensors paired up in like 10 minutes each and the range was solid through all that old lathe and plaster. I still think wired has its place but for retrofits like that I'm totally converted now. Anyone else had a job that forced them to try wireless for the first time?

Maybe skip the fancy budgeting app and just use paper

I went to a financial workshop at the library in Austin last month and everyone was raving about these new budgeting apps that track every penny. But the speaker admitted she still uses a simple notebook and ran some numbers showing apps cost like $10 a month on average. That's $120 a year just to track money, which kind of defeats the purpose for me. Has anyone else tried going back to plain old paper and saved more than they expected?

Hit 1000 calls in one shift and my brain just stopped working...

I was on phones at a call center in Phoenix and somehow managed 1000 calls in an 8 hour shift during a system outage. That number blew my mind because I barely had time to breathe between hanging up and the next ring. Has anyone else tracked their call volume and hit a crazy number like that?

Found an old Garmin 430 in a hangar that hadn't been touched since 2008

I was cleaning out a storage room at a small FBO in Tucson last month and stumbled on a Garmin 430 that looked like it was straight out of a time capsule. The screen was faded and the knobs were stiff but after blowing out the dust and cycling power a few times it actually came to life. Anyone else run into old avionics that just work after sitting for years?

Wasted $200 on a cheap paint sprayer from Home Depot

I bought that $200 Wagner sprayer for a Ford F-150 job in Austin, and it clogged up after 10 minutes of use. Took me 3 hours to clean it out every time I used it, and the finish came out all orange-peeled. I ended up borrowing a friend's $500 Sata gun and finished the truck in half the time with zero issues. Has anyone else had bad luck with budget sprayers? I'm looking at buying a used one instead now.
