Had something like that happen to a buddy of mine at a hardware store. He had a guy return a paint can that was clearly opened and half used, and the guy wanted a full refund plus a free replacement. My buddy paged the manager, and the manager literally hid in the back office and texted him "handle it." So he's standing there with this angry dude and no backup, just like you. He ended up giving the refund just to get the guy out of the store, and then the manager wrote him up for not following policy. Some bosses just leave you hanging and then blame you for how you land.
