That time a fancy dinner date turned into a cheap taco truck adventure

I went on a date back in 2018 with a guy who insisted on taking me to a super expensive steakhouse downtown, but he forgot his wallet. We ended up eating 2-for-1 tacos from a truck by the gas station, and he tried to pay with a card that got declined. Has anyone else had a date fall apart because of money problems? Did you laugh it off or just leave?

People who use impact guns on oil drain plugs need to stop

Was at a shop in Phoenix last week and watched some kid zing a drain plug back in with an impact wrench. Stripped the pan within seconds. I see this at least twice a month and it's always some backyard mechanic who thinks torque specs are just suggestions. A drain plug needs maybe 30 ft-lbs max, not 300. Why do people refuse to just use a damn torque wrench for something this basic?

My neighbor's password tip saved me from a headache last week

She told me to stop using my dog's name in passwords because it's the first thing hackers try. I changed my email password to something random, and sure enough got a login attempt alert two days later from someone in Russia. Anybody else ignore simple advice for years and then regret it?

Talk with a teller at my old bank branch made me rethink everything

I was at Chase last week to deposit a check from a landscaping job and this older teller I'd known for years started chatting. She said younger people come in all the time asking why they can't just use their phone for everything, but she's seen a ton of fraud cases from mobile deposits that could have been caught at a counter. Made me realize I've been lazy about checking deposits myself and just trusting the app. She's been doing this 30 years, so maybe I should listen more. Has anyone else had a bank employee change how you handle your money?

Hit 50 miles of finished driveway last month and it hit me different

I was finishing up a residential driveway outside of Columbus last week, and I got to thinking about all the miles of concrete I've poured over the last 20 years. My old partner used to joke that we'd pave the whole state if we kept at it. Well, I keep a rough log in my truck, and I added up last month that I've personally finished right around 50 miles of driveways, sidewalks, and parking lots. That number caught me off guard. Fifty miles is a long way to push a bull float. It made me realize how many driveways I've watched cure, how many dog prints I've had to fix, and how many homeowners came out with lemonade. You don't think about the total until you add it up. Has anyone else ever stopped to count their lifetime yardage and got a surprise?

Rant: old mechanic told me I was chasing false pressure readings for 2 months

Had a 727 engine with a bleed pressure issue that was driving me nuts. Kept pulling the sensor and swapping it out, thinking it was bad. Then this retired guy from Pratt & Whitney walks by, watches me for a minute, and says the problem is probably the ground wire on the harness, not the sensor itself. I checked it with a multimeter and yeah, 15 ohms of resistance where there should be zero. Two months of chasing ghosts (and $400 in parts) because I didn't check the simple stuff first. How often do you guys see wiring cause false readings like that?

Spent $60 on a streaming subscription service and only watched one show

I signed up for that MGM+ deal last month because it was cheap and I wanted to watch "From." Binge the whole first season in two nights. Then I realized there was nothing else on there I cared about. Cancelled it after the trial period, so I only lost $7, but the time wasted scrolling was worse. Anyone else hate getting locked into a platform for just one good series?

I used to think strategy games were boring until I tried one with a real group

For years I only played solo board games like Pandemic by myself. Then last month my nephew dragged me to a Thursday night meetup at the local library. Watching six people argue over a single move in Scythe made me see the fun in it. Now I go every week and I can't believe I missed out for so long. Has anyone else had a bad first impression that totally flipped after playing with the right people?

Stumbled on a wild stat about monthly spreads in my own journal

I was flipping back through my bullet journal from last year and realized I had 43 different monthly spreads that I abandoned halfway through. That's like 3.5 years of wasted planning if you add up all the pages. Has anyone else counted their dead monthly setups and gotten a shock?
