Sat next to a dive ops guy at the bar in Morgan City who said he would not send a tender down without a knife, and now I can not stop thinking about it
I was grabbing a burger at a spot off Front Street after a job on a platform out of Fourchon and got to talking with a diver from another crew. He mentioned that years back a tender on his boat got his airline tangled around a piling and could not reach his own knife because it was strapped to his back under the harness. They got him loose, but now this guy checks every tender's knife placement before they even splash. I always kept mine in the same spot for 12 years and never thought twice about it. So for the divers running tenders out there, where do you actually tell them to carry it, or do you hand them a second one for the harness?
Man, that story about the airline wrapping the piling is exactly why I started handing every tender a second knife on a lanyard around their neck, so there's always one within reach no matter how the harness sits. Back placement only works if you can actually get your arm back there, and half the time you can't.
