I tried a dry suit for the first time on a 40 foot job in Galveston and hated it
I usually dive wet even in cold water, but the company put me in a dry suit for a pipeline inspection off Galveston last month. I figured I would stay warmer and work longer, but the neck seal kept leaking and I spent the whole 90 minute run fighting the suit instead of the job. My hands got cold anyway because the gloves were trash. Anyone here actually prefer dry suits for shallow work, or do you just deal with the wet suit and move on?
That line about fighting the suit instead of the job hit home. I had a gig on the Great Lakes years back where the seal on my dry suit went bad on day two and I spent the rest of the week soaked anyway, just with extra steps. The old timers told me to rub the seal with talc but all that did was make me smell like a baby. Cold hands are the worst part though, once your fingers go numb you are just guessing at the torque. These days I just take the wet suit and a thermos and call it good.
