I bought a cheap $50 electric kettle from Target last month to replace my old $200 Cuisinart one that died. The cheap one boils water just as fast and has a simple on/off switch, no fancy settings. That hit me different because I've been getting sloppy myself lately, just rushing through the checklist so I can get in the water faster. Last Tuesday I actually took extra time before a morning dive, went over every seal and gauge twice. Nothing went wrong, but that calm feeling of being solid on your gear is something I had forgotten about. Anybody else got a story where a senior guy called them out on something small that actually saves your bacon?

Heard a customer on the phone telling someone our coffee shop was 'basically a library' now

I was wiping tables yesterday and this guy at table three was on a call saying, 'Yeah, I just come here to work, it's basically a library, the staff never bother you.' I mean, idk, maybe it's just me but that kind of stung? We're a small shop in Portland and we're told to give people space, but hearing it put that way made me feel invisible. Has anyone else had a customer say something that made you feel like part of the furniture?

I finally asked my neighbor about his gravel path after seeing it hold up for 3 years

He lives two doors down in our Phoenix suburb, and his whole backyard is rock and cactus. I asked him last week what he used under the gravel to keep weeds out. He said, 'I just used the cheap landscape fabric from the big box store, but I put down a full 4-inch layer of crusher fines first and compacted it.' He explained that the fines make a solid base so the fabric doesn't tear, and the gravel on top stays level. His path looks as good as the day he put it in, with almost no weeds. Has anyone else had luck with crusher fines as a base layer, or did you use something different?
