Showerthought: I walked through the old library in Springfield and saw a shelf that made me rethink book clubs

I was at the main library in Springfield last Tuesday, you know, the one with the big stone lions out front. I was just browsing the fiction section when I saw a whole shelf labeled 'Book Club Favorites, 2005-2010'. It was full of copies of the same books, all worn out in different ways. One copy of a certain bestseller had notes scribbled in three different colors of pen, another was totally clean but the spine was cracked. It hit me that for years, I thought a good book club pick was one everyone would like. But looking at those books, I realized the best ones are the ones people fight about, the ones that get marked up and worn out from being talked over. A smooth, agreeable book leaves nothing to say after you close it. Has anyone else had a pick that split the room but made for an amazing meeting?

Trying to fix my grandpa's old hand plane sent me down a three day rabbit hole

I found his old Stanley No. 5 in the shed, all rusty, and thought I'd clean it up. Figured it would take an afternoon. The sole was way out of flat, so I started lapping it on sandpaper on my workbench. After two hours, I realized my bench wasn't flat either, which was throwing everything off. I had to build a simple lapping plate with a piece of thick glass and spray adhesive, which took a whole day just to get set up right. Then the actual lapping took another full day of elbow grease, checking with a straight edge every few minutes. What I thought was a simple clean-up job turned into a three day project just to get the base flat before I even touched the blade or chipbreaker. Has anyone else had a simple restore turn into a huge geometry lesson?

My sandwiches always get soggy between dives, any fixes?

I work on offshore rigs, and during surface intervals, my sandwiches end up wet from condensation. Tried wrapping them in foil, but it just steams them. What do you all do to keep food fresh? I need something that can handle being in a dive bag for hours. Maybe there's a better container or packing method you've found useful.

I thought hot mud was just for speed freaks until my last fix

You mentioned pre-mixed works for 90% of jobs, but that feels like an overstatement once you try hot mud. It sets quick with no shrinkage, which is a big help in damp rooms or when you're up against the clock. The original poster got it right, you can sand and paint so much faster. Why stick to one product when the other can handle problems pre-mixed can't? I grabbed a bag for my truck after a similar surprise and now I use it all the time.

Your story hits way too close to home for me. I once tried to do leg lifts under my desk and kicked my computer tower so hard it rebooted (a truly majestic moment of failure).
