A client in Chicago told me my balayage technique was creating a 'hard line' after 3 weeks, so I switched to a softer backcombing method.

I'm debating if this softer technique is always better or if the old way just needed more precise toning, what do you all think?

That hard line is sometimes what people are paying for.

Remember that old debate about the original Star Wars special editions. When they smoothed out the rough edges, some fans got really mad. What's the line between a polished product and losing the original feel? Is it about the artist's vision or the customer's expectation?

Chicago clients can be picky but that's their right. A hard line after three weeks sounds like a toning problem, not a backcombing problem. Maybe the old way just needs a better toner instead of changing the whole technique.
