Unpopular opinion: cooking bacon in the oven is way better than pan frying

I tried baking a full pound of bacon at 400 degrees on a sheet pan last Sunday after seeing a video and it came out perfectly crispy without all the grease splatter. But my buddy from Chicago swears it changes the flavor and texture too much compared to a cast iron skillet. Has anyone else had this debate and what method do you stick with?

Oven bacon's the only way to go if you hate cleaning up grease splatter... pan frying leaves a sticky mess all over the stovetop. That cast iron skillet might give you a slightly different texture but the oven gets it just as crispy without the hassle. Also you can cook way more at once on a sheet pan which is great for a crowd. Your Chicago buddy probably just likes the ritual of standing over the pan flipping strips honestly.

Yeah for real, cleaning up grease splatter is the worst part of cooking bacon. Oven method is just so much easier to deal with after.

Jumped on the oven bacon bandwagon a few years ago and never looked back. I line my sheet pan with foil, lay the bacon out, throw it in a cold oven, set it to 400, and just check on it after 15 minutes or so. Comes out perfect every time, no flipping, no splatter, and I can make a whole pound at once for meal prep. My wife still insists on pan frying when she makes it and I just don't get it, too much mess.

drew965 said "the ritual of standing over the pan flipping strips" and honestly that's exactly what my husband says too. I read somewhere that the oven method actually changes the fat rendering process, something about convection heat versus direct contact... and maybe that does alter the flavor a little. But I tried it both ways side by side once and honestly I couldn't tell a big difference. The convenience of pulling a whole tray out and having perfect bacon is just too good to go back. Plus you can pour all that rendered fat into a jar for later, which is way harder to do from a skillet full of strips.
