Read a study that said most people think they're better drivers than average, which is just math that can't work
I was reading some old traffic safety stuff online and found a report from a university. It said like 80% of drivers rate themselves as above average in skill. That's wild to me because it's a numbers thing, right? Half have to be below the middle line. I've been driving a rig for over a decade and see crazy stuff every day, so maybe I get why people think that. You feel in control in your own car. But it also means a lot of folks are probably overconfident and make risky moves without knowing it. It's a weird blind spot. Do you think most people are actually pretty good drivers and the stats are wrong, or are we all just kidding ourselves?

Ever notice how people merge without signaling? That's the overconfidence. Stats are probably right, we just judge ourselves on intent and others on results. You see it hauling freight, someone cuts you off because they "had room" but didn't check your blind spot. It's a self-awareness gap, not a skill one.

Forget the math for a second. What if most people are actually okay drivers, but the average is just really low?

Buddy of mine had a guy try to merge into his lane where there clearly wasn't room, then honk at him like he was the problem. @thomas275 nailed it, we all think we're fine until we're not.
