I finally looked up what hostels actually cost in 2005 vs now
Was reading an old travel forum from like 2008 and someone posted a hostel in Prague for $8 a night. Same hostel today is $28. I knew prices went up but that's more than triple lol. Found a breakdown on some budget travel blog that said the average hostel price globally has gone from $12 to $35 since 2010. Made me feel old remembering when I paid $10 for a dorm bed in Barcelona back in 2012. Has anyone else noticed their old budget trips would be way harder to do now?

Started looking at flights to places I went in my 20s and basically everything's doubled. It's not just hostels either, feels like the whole "cheap backpacker trip" is getting priced out of existence.

Has anyone actually looked at what's happening with airline loyalty programs and miles? Because here's the thing nobody talks about - those programs are basically rigged now, they devalued points like crazy during covid and never gave them back. I was checking my old account and the same flight that used to cost 15,000 miles now costs 40,000 if you can even find award seats at all. And don't get me started on the "budget" airlines, they nickel and dime you so bad that by the time you check a bag and pick a seat you're paying more than a regular carrier. Makes you wonder if they're intentionally making travel harder for young people who don't have tons of credit card points or cash saved up.

@alice_kim nailed it. The mileage devaluation is basically a hidden price hike, and budget airlines are just a trap now. They bet on young people not having the cash or points to push back.
