Had a talk with my uncle that shook me up about vaccines

I was at a family dinner last Sunday and my uncle Steve, who's a retired pharmacist from Dallas, told me he stopped getting the flu shot 4 years ago. He said he started digging through the VAERS database and found something like 2,000 reported deaths linked to flu vaccines in one season. He's not an anti-vax guy but he showed me specific reports on his tablet. I'm not saying I agree with him but it made me wonder, how many people actually look at the raw data themselves instead of just trusting headlines?

I finally figured out why my morning pour-over was taking forever

Last Tuesday I was rushing to get to work and my V60 was draining slower than usual. I checked my grinder setting and it was way too fine, like almost espresso fine. Turns out I bumped the adjustment ring when I was cleaning it the night before. I fixed it by grinding a bit coarser and the brew time went from 5 minutes down to 3. Has anyone else had their grinder settings accidentally shift on them?

Spent $150 on a fancy Danish dough whisk and honestly it's not worth it

I see everyone raving about those expensive Danish dough whisks, but I bought one from a local kitchen supply store in Portland and I'm not impressed. It cost me $150 and it does the same job as my old wooden spoon for mixing dough. The metal handle gets cold in my hands and the wire loops bend after a few uses with stiff bread dough. I went back to my $5 spoon from the thrift shop and my sourdough turns out just as good. Has anyone else regretted dropping cash on hyped-up baking tools?

That time a neighbor tried to cancel me over a parking spot

Last Saturday, I parked in front of my own house, and this guy from three doors down came out screaming that I was "taking up space" that belonged to the whole block. He posted my license plate on Nextdoor calling me a selfish jerk, and then I found out he’d been complaining to the HOA about me for months without ever saying a word to my face. Has anyone else had a neighbor try to start a public shaming thing over something that tiny?

Serious question, why did it take me 2 years to figure out bagging and boarding my floppies alphabetically?

I spent 3 straight hours last Sunday reorganizing a stack of 200 issues because I kept pulling them out in the wrong order and got so frustrated I almost threw a Daredevil #131 across the room, has anyone else found a filing system that actually saves time?

I always thought you had to prime walls before painting until my buddy showed me a test patch

Been painting rooms in my house for years, always did the whole primer coat thing. Last month I was painting my guest bedroom and my neighbor (he's a contractor) stopped by. He grabbed a roller and just went straight paint on a small section of the wall. Waited for it to dry and I couldn't tell the difference from the primed part. He said if the wall is already painted and in good shape, primer is mostly a waste. Saved me like $25 on a gallon of primer for that room. Anyone else been doing extra steps for no reason?

My buddy the line cook told me to stop oversalting pasta water and he was right

I always did the whole "salty like the sea" thing with a tablespoon per gallon, but he said that's way too much for most sauces. Tried half that amount last week and my tomato sauce actually tasted better, not saltier somehow. Has anyone else found a specific salt ratio that works for them?

Rant: Smoked brisket at 225 for 14 hours and it came out like shoe leather

I kept seeing everyone online say low and slow at 225 is the only way, so I stuck with it for years even though my brisket was always dry and tough. Last weekend I bumped the smoker to 275 on a whim and the brisket came out tender and juicy in just 8 hours, no wrap needed. Has anyone else had that moment where they realized the old school temps just don't work for their setup?
