My foreman said to always preheat the 4130 before welding the header flange.

He told me last month on the job in Spokane. I skipped it once to save time. Cracked right along the heat line after a single pressure cycle. Cost us a full day to cut out and redo. Anyone else had a weld fail from rushing the preheat?

That's why they call it a procedure and not a suggestion! Learned the same lesson on a race car chassis last year.

My old house had the same problem, a tiny crack that cost thousands to fix.
