I thought those cheap plastic planters from the big box store were a total waste of money.

I bought a bunch of the $5 ones last spring because I needed a lot of pots for my new herb garden and didn't want to spend a fortune. I was sure they'd crack in the sun after one season or just look really cheap. But honestly, after a full year outside through a hot summer and a wet winter here, they are still holding up perfectly. The plastic is thicker than I thought, and the drainage holes actually work well. I even moved a few around when I redid a bed and they didn't break. I'm actually kind of impressed and feel silly for almost spending way more on ceramic. Has anyone else had a cheap garden product surprise them like this?

Shoutout to the guy who brought in a laptop with a bag of rice still inside the keyboard

He'd tried the 'rice trick' on a spilled drink, but left the grains in for a week and they jammed the scissor switches. Anyone else have a 'fix' that made the problem worse?

A judge at the Memphis in May contest told me my brisket was 'dry as a bone'

That comment hit hard, but it made me look at my whole process. I realized I was rushing the rest period, pulling my briskets off the smoker and slicing them within 30 minutes. The judge, an old guy named Carl, pulled me aside and said, 'Son, that meat needs to sweat. Wrap it in towels and let it sit in a cooler for at least two hours, maybe three.' I tried it the next weekend on a 16-pound packer. The difference was night and day. The brisket held its moisture and the fat rendered perfectly. Now I never skip the long rest. Anyone else have a contest critique that actually improved their game?

A trick for getting a tight corner on a weird angled ceiling joint

I was working on a sunroom addition in Springfield last week and the ceiling met the wall at this odd 110-degree angle. My normal corner bead just wouldn't sit right. I ended up cutting a thin strip of scrap drywall, maybe an inch wide, and using it as a backer behind the paper tape before I mudded. It gave the tape something solid to form against and made the whole thing way easier to finish. Has anyone else run into a weird angle like that and found a different fix?

My brother called my grocery budget 'sad lettuce money' and it actually helped

I was showing my brother my budget spreadsheet last month, proud of my $75 a week grocery goal. He looked at it, then at my fridge full of wilted greens and said, 'Dude, that's just sad lettuce money. You're buying stuff because it's cheap, not because you'll eat it.' It hit me hard. I was throwing away $15 worth of produce every week trying to stick to my number. So I changed my plan. Now I budget $90 a week but I plan three specific meals before I shop. I buy the exact veggies for those meals, even if bell peppers cost more than a bag of spinach I'll ignore. I've wasted almost nothing for three weeks! Has anyone else had a friend point out a dumb budget habit that actually saved you cash?
