Rant: That date where everyone told me to dump him but I didn't
So last Friday I went on a third date with this guy named Mike who showed up 40 minutes late to our dinner at this Italian place on Elm Street. He didn't even apologize, just said traffic was bad. My friends all said red flag, dump him. But honestly, I waited it out and we talked for 3 hours after that. He told me his mom had a medical scare that afternoon and he was at the hospital. He didn't want to cancel on me last minute. So we ordered garlic bread and split a tiramisu, and it was actually the most real conversation I've had in months. Has anyone else had a date that looked bad on paper but turned out okay?

Oh man, that's rough but honestly kind of sweet. I once had a date show up with a black eye and I assumed the worst, turns out he walked into a sign while texting me about being excited for the date. We dated for like four months after that. So yeah, sometimes the bad first impression is just life getting in the way.

Forty minutes is forty minutes, though. I had a guy do the exact same thing - showed up super late to a coffee date on Third Street, told me his dog got sick. I gave him the benefit of the doubt, we dated for two months, and it turned out he was just chronically late to everything. His mom's medical scare could be totally legit, but that's the kind of detail that's really easy to lie about on a third date when you're trying to cover your tracks. Garlic bread and tiramisu are nice and all, but the foundation is shaky if someone can't even send a text when they're running late to the hospital. Maybe it worked out this time, but personally I'd be side-eyeing the next date hard.
