Unpopular opinion: My freelance billing guilt led me to a clear fix

I used to add a few extra hours to invoices when projects dragged on, which felt shady. Now I charge a flat fee for each job upfront, so clients know the cost. This removed the temptation to overbill and made my finances simpler. It feels way better to be totally transparent!

Watched a close friend wrestle with this same problem for years. She would track every minute for clients, then feel awful adding buffer hours when meetings ran long. The stress of those padded invoices actually made her lose sleep. Switching to project based pricing changed everything for her. Now she quotes one clear number and any extra work gets a separate conversation. She says the mental freedom was worth more than those old phantom hours.

That "mental freedom" shows how we trap ourselves counting everything in life.

Spot on what betty_price14 said about trapping ourselves. That pricing shift works because it stops the constant counting that eats at you.
