Spent $75 on a book from a canceled author and it's the best money I ever wasted

How do you even find a book that costs that much? Honestly, I would have called that crazy a few years ago. But I get it now, separating the art from the artist is a real thing. Seeing @price.tara's comment about their old self judging really hit home for me. Sometimes the work just stands on its own, no matter who made it.

I always thought the old-school feeler gauge was fine for setting valves, but a dial indicator changed the game

Yeah, that feeling of seeing it directly is huge. @dakotablack, I had the same thing happen when I finally learned to set valve lash by feel with the engine running. It just clicks in a way the book method never did for me. Makes you trust your hands more, I guess.

A client's offhand comment about his driveway made me stop and think.

So what's the best way to make sure they actually add that air stuff right? Seen too many crews skip it to save five minutes.

Appreciation post: figuring out how to make my own veggie broth from scraps took me a whole year of trial and error...

Honestly, same. My first batch was just onion skins and celery ends and it tasted like sad dirt water. Took me forever to learn you need some carrot tops or a bit of mushroom to round it out. I definitely froze a bag of scraps for three months once because I was scared to try again.

TIL how old-school plant lovers swapped seeds before the web

You say missing the envelope anticipation, but I find the old way just meant more delays and uncertainty. Online orders arrive fast and you know exactly what you're getting without failed trades. Isn't instant access to rare varieties better than waiting weeks for a maybe?
