Remember when we all used to set posts with a sledge and a level?
Had a job in Austin last spring where the ground was pure rock. Tried the old way first, took us a full day for ten holes. Next day, rented a gas-powered post driver. Finished the other forty posts before lunch. The difference in speed and how straight they set was huge. Anyone still using a sledge for a whole run, or is that just for repairs now?

Watched my buddy stubbornly try to set a whole fence line with just a sledge last summer. He was so beat by the third post he could barely lift his arms, and nothing was lining up right. He finally caved and got a driver, which just proves that sometimes the old way is just the hard way.

Read an article once where a carpenter said using a sledge for posts is like digging a pool with a spoon. Sure it works, but you'll be wrecked and the results are usually sloppy. That extra control from a driver or even a manual pounder makes a huge difference for keeping things straight. Your buddy learned the hard way.
