A buyer's agent told me my inspection contingency was too long for a fast closing

We were trying to close on a house in Austin in 21 days, and our agent said our 10-day inspection period was a deal killer. She said, 'In this market, sellers see that and pick the next offer.' We cut it down to 5 days and got the house. Has anyone else had to shrink their inspection window to compete?

Yeah, the "deal killer" line sounds familiar. My friend in Phoenix had to do a 3-day inspection window last year, which meant basically hiring the first inspector who picked up the phone. It was a mess. I see what @kim373 is saying, but sometimes you just have to play the game to even get a seat at the table.

My cousin in Raleigh had a 48-hour inspection window last spring. She had to pay a huge rush fee to get a structural engineer out there. The market was just that crazy.

Ten days is pretty normal where I'm from. Makes me wonder if your agent just wanted a faster commission check.
